“Northern Virginia” is more of a functional name than a clearly defined area. It consists of several counties and independent cities in the state of Virginia. It is a widespread region radiating southerly and westward from Washington DC. It is the most populated region of both Virginia and the Washington Metro area.
Demographics
As of 2006, the U.S. Census estimates that there are approximately 2,432,823 people in Northern Virginia, which includes Clarke, Spotsylvania, Faquier, Warren and Stafford Counties, as well as the independent city of Fredericksburg.
Economy
Northern Virginia is the highest income region of Virginia and the most affluent region in the nation. The federal government is one of Northern Virginia’s main employers and home to numerous government agencies, including the CIA Headquarters, the pentagon, Fort Meyer, Fort Belvoir, Marine Corps Base Quantico, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Geological Survey. Government contracting is an important part of the region’s economy and Arlington alone is home to over 600 federal contractors.
Education
Northern Virginia, including Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William comprise a total population of 1,973,513 and is highly educated. 55.5% of its population 25 years or older holds a bachelor’s degree or higher.
19 of the region’s schools appear in the top 200 of Newsweek’s America’s Top Public High Schools. Although Northern Virginia contains a large portion of the commonwealth population, there are only a few colleges and universities in the region. George Mason University in Fairfax County is the most well-known and is the second largest university in Virginia.

Attractions

The region also has large shopping malls including Potomac Mills and Tysons Corner Center that attract many visitors. Old Alexandria is known for its historic churches, restaurants, gift shops, and artist studios. Scenic Great Falls Park and Mount Vernon are especially noteworthy.
